Web Monkey's Blog - Episode 3

After the styles mysteriously reverting back to their original format a month or so ago, I finally worked out that this was because PHPBB uses a weird system allowing you to modify the styles through the adminsitration page without the changes actually being written to the core stylesheet... it's stored in some kind of weird database, and then checks the last modification date for the core stylesheet against the version stored in the database, and then applies any differences... Last time I'd made minor change to the core stylesheet it had decided that it no longer needed to use the version in the database and reverted to the core stylesheet... Anyway, I have now written all changes to the core stylesheet and (except for a few minor things) the stylesheet is now back to the familiar browns we all recognise...

In other news, the war against the spammers continues, and we now have over 300 IP addresses in our site banlist... They just keep coming... I have implemented some IP range bans for IP address ranges which commonly crop up... If for some reason you find yourself affected by an IP ban (unlikely, but it could happen!) e-mail webmaster@heroesandheroines.org and tell me your IP address (you can find it out at http://www.moanmyip.com/ if you need) and I'll unban you... :)

Bad Webmonkey! Bad boy!
Are you sure that was the only site that identifies your IP address for you for free ;-)

Can you somehow open up access to the guilds? I can't see guilds on the main forums page and have to revert to looking at a long range of active posts to see anything from the guilds...

Ha! No, but it's the most entertaining by far! :)

What guilds do you need access to and I'll access you up... Also, If anybody else needs access setting up, just let me know and I'll sort it out... :)

Hey Seb,

Shouldn't you just set up everybody with the same access to guilds as on the old site? Should just be a matter of a couple of SQL queries to work out what access people had...

In theory that's a good idea, but in practice the way that the forums works is now different - the SQL structure is different, the forum code is different and the way that the character posting works is different, so in practice it's not quite as easy as just writing an algorithm to copy the accesses from one to the other I'm afraid... Thanks for the suggestion though! :)

Also the old site was gaffatape and string with things being used for things they shouldn't like a spoon for steak and paper as a fire blanket

Ha! There's still plenty of gaffa tape and string! I also used partly chewed bubblegum for one bit... :)
